Belovy matches people using birth data and astronomical patterns. The product was not confusing. Explaining it was.

Understanding the business

Belovy is a dating platform that uses birth date and astronomical data to identify compatibility patterns, alongside a Matchmaking Concierge service for users who want a more guided approach.

Unlike familiar dating platforms, Belovy has to explain the idea behind the product before users can understand its value.

The challenge:

A new user arrives with two reactions at once: "That's interesting" and "Is this real?" Both need to be addressed without making the experience feel complicated.

Explaining the methodology too early made the product feel difficult to understand. Skipping the explanation made it feel less credible. The platform also asks for personal information, including birth date and birth time, before users have established enough trust.

The site needed to:

  • Introduce the idea before explaining the methodology
  • Make the approach credible without turning the page into a manual
  • Address privacy when users begin questioning how their data is used
  • Support two different intents — self-serve app and Concierge matchmaking

Our approach:

We designed the experience around progressive explanation, giving users the right amount of information at each stage.

  • Opened with what Belovy does differently, in one line before introducing the methodology
  • Layered the methodology progressively, allowing curious users to explore deeper
  • Placed privacy and data-handling information where the user needs it, rather than hiding it in a policy link
  • Used real stories and compatibility examples to demonstrate how the concept works
  • Created separate journeys for app signup and Concierge matchmaking, reflecting their different levels of commitment

The impact:

The site now acts as an explanation layer for the product. The concept is introduced simply, then unpacked step by step, with each section answering the question raised by the previous one.

Privacy and data handling are addressed at the point where users are asked to provide information. App signup and Concierge matchmaking also follow separate paths, so users can understand the product before deciding how deeply they want to engage.

When a product is unfamiliar, explaining it is part of the product.

People are more likely to engage with an unfamiliar idea when the experience gives them a clear reason to understand it before asking them to commit.
